Foam & Reflection 2023

Oil on Panel 4.5” x 6”

Painted en plein air, these sketches form part of the artist’s methodology to keep a practice of working from life. Each study is an attempt to examine a specific time of day, color arrangement, crashing or receding waves, reflections over sand or water, foam, barrels and so on. Building a library of information based on experience guides the artist’s memory and imagination to later take a study and compose a more developed picture in the studio.

Kevin (b.1992) and his family immigrated to the US from Peru in the year 2003. They settled a new home in Fairfax, Virginia, a county relatively close to the National Gallery in Washington D.C., a museum Kevin would spend visiting through much of his youth. As a senior in high school, he was awarded the National American Visions Medal from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. In 2013, he moved to New York to study at Grand Central Atelier. Upon completion in 2017, he became an instructor and began working in the studio of renowned painter and founder of the GCA, Jacob Collins. Kevin has been a recipient of the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund Scholarship, the Anders Larson-Toich Fund Scholarship, and the GCA Structure Prix.

Classically trained, Kevin searches for visual patterns and at times amorphous gestures as he attempts to encounter a sense of the beauty found in nature. He aims to comprehend the world before his eyes by means of careful and patient observation. Kevin teaches painting in GCA’s Core Program and has traveled internationally to instruct workshops. Currently, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
